Brothers, sisters, and the fellow citizens of the worldI feel deeply honored that the Manhae Grand Prize Review Committee has recognized my lifelong work and awarded me with the Manhae Peace Prize. As a Buddhist monk, I always emphasize the importance of how the religions and Buddhism can reach out to engage human interactions and unite a society.Peace is a powerful concept that everyone aspires to attain. For me, “peace” does not manifest naturally but rather marches hand in hand with “liberty”, “fraternity”, “efficiency”and “integrity.” While “aestheticism” and “emptiness” help to serve as a means towards the same end…the ultimate stability in mental neutrality or Nirvana. Everyone’s idea of peace is different but to understand the Buddhist concept of peace, one must shift their focus back to oneself, to be able to recognize and understand the behaviors of one’s own mind.Without turning a blind eye to the outside world, one must learn the sensations or the internal reactions of their minds when being externally stimulated through the six sensory contacts. Then one must master how to eradicate the defilement or the evilness that arises from within. Sustainable peace can truly be realized when our minds, equipped with true wisdom, are gradually liberated from greed, anger and ignorance. Pañña or true wisdom will allow one to see reality as it is. I believe this type of inner peace or pañña is more delicate, more intricate, and supremely peaceful beyond logic any bare intellec

tuals can fathom.For almost 50 years, I have devoted my life to preserving the Buddha’s teachings with an effort to materialize the Noble Eightfold Path into a tangible living phenomenon. Asoke communities throughout Thailand offer a noble and exemplary way for people to live their lives with the “right understanding” which is a key Buddhist principle. Asoke followers voluntarily live a modest and self-sufficient lifestyle in the communal environment where the villages and the schools integrate coherently with the Buddhist temples or dhamma through an osmosis-like manner. We strive for self-reliance so that we can extend our strength to help others. The world vigorously yearns for not only any peace and liberation but also the right kind of peace and liberation which can only be formed through the right understanding of selflessness. I strongly believe that the essence of the Asoke model, despite being small in scale, can deliberately seed the much-needed love and compassion, and cultivate that sustainable peace back into a chaotic society. I would like to take this opportunity to invite all of you to witness and prove the sacrosanctity of Asoke which I have proudly created and offer as an alternative way of living for the modern world.Situated in different parts of the world, the Manhae Peace Foundation and Asoke Community share the same deep commitment towards achieving peace.
