SAWITRI PIWNUAL : FACTORS AFFECTING HEALTH STATUS OF FARMERS BETWEEN ALTERNATIVE AND CONVENTIONAL AGRICULTURE, IN YASOTHON PROVINCE MASTER OF SCIENCE PROGRAM IN PUBLIC HEALTH. ABSTRACT This survey research was conducted among farmers in Yasothon province. The purposes of this research were to (1) investigate the health status of farmers between alternative agriculture and conventional agriculture (2) compare the health status and (3) find out the important factors affecting health status of farmers between alternative agriculture and conventional agriculture. 734 population samples by Multi-stage sampling process consisted of 334 farmers from alternative agriculture and 400 farmers from conventional agriculture by means of purposive sampling method. Weighting and blood pressure apparatus were used in physical health status evaluation and interview form was also used for qualitative data collection.Data analysis was performed using frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation. Inferential statistics were used in hypothesis testing as Independent sample t-test and Multiple Regression Analysis. The results revealed that the physical health status of farmers in Yasothon was found in the high level (x̅ = 4.02, S.D.= 0.39 for alternative agriculture ; x̅ = 4.14, S.D.= 0.76 for conventional agriculture). d that the mental health status of alternative agriculture farmers was significantly higher level (x̅ = 4.33, S.D.= 0.81) than that of farmers in conventional agriculture (x̅ = 3.06, S.D.= 0.71).For the health status in social and environmental dimensions, alternative agriculture farmers were at the high level (x̅ = 4.32, S.D.= 0.87), while conventional agriculture had a moderate social and environmental health condition (x̅ = 3.19,S.D. = 0.76). A very good spiritual health aspect was observed in alternative agriculture farmers (x̅ = 4.71,S.D.= 0.63) and the good spiritual health aspect was found in conventional agriculture farmers (x̅=3.57, S.D.=0.75). In addition, this research clearly revealed that four dimensions of health status were averaged in the very healthy and very good level for alternative agriculture (x̅=4.44, S.D.=0.67) and the good level for conventional agriculture (x̅ = 3.46, S.D. = 0.51). The health status of farmers between alternative and conventional agriculture practices in Yasothon province was significantly different at 0.05. 4 factors as knowledge, health protection behavior at work, attitude and occupational health hazard factors statistically affected (7) health status for alternative agriculture farmers with the accuracy of predicting rate at 31.30 percent (± sd. 0.278), while conventional agriculture only 2 factors as information perception and attitude factors showed statistically significant level 0.05 with the accuracy of predicting rate at 9.30 percent (± sd. 0.555).
